happymondayAlthough many families rely on the stroke of midnight to commit to a new lifestyle goal, such as eating healthier, exercising more or catching up on those much needed ZZZs, researchers at John Hopkins University have devised a better plan for achieving long-lasting results — focus on a healthier Monday instead.


Studies show that engaging in healthy behaviors on a Monday helps children and adults feel more motivated and committed to maintain healthier habits than on any other day of the week. In fact, according to The Monday Campaign, a non-profit public health initiative backed by Johns Hopkins, Columbia and Syracuse Universities, research consistently finds that individuals are most receptive to starting or recommitting to healthier behaviors on the first day of the week, simply because Monday is often seen as a day to re-boot and start fresh.


So, rather than commit to a once-a-year New Year’s pledge, why not begin each week with a healthy goal? Over time, you’ll notice that by taking small steps towards improving your health and well-being, you’ll be better able to maintain healthier habits as the days, weeks and years go by.

Meatless Monday:Working in collaboration with the Center for a Livable Future (CLF) at Johns Hopkins University, Meatless Monday encourages families to focus each Monday on serving a meal without red or processed meat, and to focus, instead, on serving more fruits and veggies. By doing so, research suggests you may help to reduce the risk of illnesses, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and obesity, as well as to conserve precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel. Move it Monday: Move It Monday offers fitness routines, tips and inspiration to help individuals, families and communities incorporate physical fitness into their weekly routines — starting with Monday, of course.
